The World of Barge People
Tourist route : « The World of Barge People »
Having restored the quaysides, the commune of Saint-Mammès is pleased to offer visitors a route in the heart of the town in privileged country surroundings.
It’s a Saint-Mammès « garden side » that we offer you. You can browse through a maze of trails bordering many small typical private gardens. Thanks to various themes, come and discover the barge people’s world and dive into their history and their activity.
Take a stroll through our alleys and along our quays. Observing the traces of the great floods of 1910, 1924 and 1955, you will perceive the marks of this waterway culture which faithfully reflects our earlier village life.
This tourist route is a real invitation to explore the history of these barge people who have now often become « land » people.
Free or guided tours: information available from the town hall.

The Sisley trails
Come taste and capture the inspiration of Sisley and the decorative features that attracted him to Saint-Mammès.
Moreover, to be convinced about this, take a look at the work of the Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley who lived in Moret sur Loing at the end of the 19th century and painted numerous sights of our beautiful Saint-Mammès quaysides.
On the Sisley trail, you will see some reproductions of his work on enamelled lava stone plates. These trace the sketches he produced in his notebooks every time he sold a painting, what we nowadays call his « drawings of reason ». « Sisley is the painter of a region and not of a town ».
Many regional painters still stop along our banks to make pictorial works.
Landscapes are honored with the Sisley orientation tables. They can be found on the quay of the Seine, near the “Bollards” square, facing the church.
They allow walkers to visit the places where Alfred Sisley stood to paint. They are the starting point of his interpretive painting trail, a complementary visit to the Sisley promenade located on the lower level of the “Croix Blanche” quay where the enamelled lava stone plates can be admired.
